For November we wanted to honour our whiskey making chums from across the pond by producing a pack that contained 4 variations of American whiskey. So we came up with The Thanksgiving pack which contains a Rye, a Wheat, a Corn and an American Single malt. We wanted to steer clear of the traditional bourbon that people often associate with the American Whiskey industry and show you some other amazing whiskies that they produce. We hope you enjoy our Thanksgiving pack. Bowsaw Straight Corn American Whiskey 43% (We think this makes a good first dram) Let’s start with a little fact for you, this whiskey takes it’s name from the saw that is used by the cooper’s with which they cut the top of the whiskey barrel off. Bowsaw Whiskey is distilled and matured in Owensboro and Louisville Kentucky, where they have over 350 combined years of whiskey making knowledge to tap into!! Louisville is prime whiskey territory, with Angels Envy, Mitchters, Heavens Hill and Old Forrester also located in the area. The mash content consists of 91% Corn, 5% Barley and 4% Rye. On the nose: Really sweet, with hints of peanut butter along with a spiced latte from a high street coffee shop. To taste: Creamy and clingy and still really sweet, hints of chocolate chip pancake with syrup poured over them. The finish: The sweetness has stepped aside slightly and now there's a light spice, but it’s very light Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey 45.2% (Maybe have this Second) We’ve gone to one of our favourite distilleries, who are based in Woodford County, Kentucky for this wheat whiskey, which has a mash bill of 52% wheat, 20% malt, 20% corn and 8% rye. This wheat whiskey is apparently based on historical recipes and as this distillery has been producing whiskey since 1812 these could be pretty old recipes. The influence of the core Woodford Reserve Bourbon has also been taken into consideration when producing this whiskey and this is apparent in the taste profile. On the nose: Vanilla and floral with a dab of pear To taste: Vanilla again, with more pear and some apple too, as well as chocolate and coconut The finish: The chocolate hangs about, but the vanilla has vanished and been replaced with a subtle spice Belmont Farm Kopper Kettle American Single Malt 43% (Try this third) An American Single Malt, that can’t be right you may be saying, well there's a fair few being produced in the USA and this one is up there with the best in our opinion. The Belmont Farm distillery is based in Culpeper, Virginia and for the past 30 years they’ve been distilling their whiskey in a solid copper pot still. This is a slower distillation process than a column still would provide, but according to the distillers at Belmont they achieve a more aromatic and fresh whiskey using this process. The maturation process is the same as a bourbon, in that the whiskey sits in American new Oak barrels for 3 years, before purified mineral water from the farm is added to bring the whiskey to a bottle ready 43%. The mash bill is 100% malted barley. On the nose: Sweet and floral with honey and cereal To taste: Cereal and honey and chocolate To finish: Fruit and chocolate Rittenhouse Straight Rye 100 Proof 50% (we’d try this last) Sticking with the theme, this whiskey commemorates the Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia and is distilled and matured at the Bernheim distillery which is based in Louisville Kentucky. The distillery forms part of the Heaven Hill family and this whiskey has picked up numerous awards over the years and appeared in several ‘whiskies to try before you die’ lists. Despite this whiskey having a 50%ABV, we didn’t feel that it needed a drop of water to tame the burn. But that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t try this, if you see fit, remember you drink whiskey how you like it!! The mash bill for this whiskey is 51% rye, 35% corn and 14 barley. On the nose: Gentle and aromatic spices and dried fruits To taste: Fruity, with oranges being most notable, along with soft spice, oak and honey To finish: Orange and spicy.

The staycation pack has been influenced by our summer holidays but additionally we wanted to provide you with some of the amazing whiskeys that are available from our own shores. We all know that Scotland and Ireland have great whiskey heritage, but don’t rule out Wales and England too. This pack has a Blended Irish whiskey which comes from England, an American Bourbon from Wales a Barrel Proof whiskey from England and an Independent Bottler from Scotland. Jatt Life Blended Irish Whiskey (We’d recommend drinking this first) We’ve got an aware winner in the pack this month, as the guys and girls at Jatt Life have recently (August 2021) been awarded GOLD, in the Irish Whiskey Masters Awards 2021 with the Spirits Business, congratulations!! This 40%ABV blended Irish whiskey, comes from their Kingswinford site in the Midlands and is drawn from a combination of virgin oak and sherry casks and makes for a very enjoyable dram. On the nose: There’s plenty going on here, with dried fruit and spices coming forward mostly with a hint of peanuts in the background To taste: Dried fruit and apples along with some toffee provide an approachable taste profile The finish: Sweet fruits and smooth honey Charlie Parry's 3 Year Old Bourbon (We’d drink this one next) As we’ve already eluded to, this is bourbon in every sense of the word with the exception that it’s finalised in Wales. The bourbon undergoes the traditional distilling process and maturation in virgin American Oak barrels before the father and son team from the Mallows distillery in South Wales finish off the process by bringing the whiskey to 40%ABV with Welsh water. On the nose: Aroma of toasted oak, vanilla and caramel To taste: A subtle sweet taste, with vanilla and toffee dominating the oak The finish: A nice long finish, with a sweetness and slight hint of spice Knockando 13 Year Old (2007), bottled by Signatory un-chill filtered collection (casks 304100 and 304104) (Try this one third) The single malt began life at the Knockando distillery in Speyside Scotland, back in December 2007, it underwent the traditional distillation process before being placed into Hogshead casks (casks 304100 and 304104) for 13 years. Then Signatory who are an independent bottler will have sourced the casks that they believe best represent Knockando and bottle the whiskey in it’s truest form, that means this whiskey is un-chill filtered and has a higher ABV of 46%. On the nose: We’ve got those big Speyside aromas coming through, lots of citrus fruits both fresh and candied To taste: Fruit comes through aplenty, along with nuts and spice The finish: Vanilla and almonds and a little more spice Randolph Oxford Barrel Proof (We’d recommend saving this for last) Last up we have an English barrel proof whiskey from the Black Bottle Distillery, who are located in Oxfordshire. As this is barrel proof, you’d expect it to pack a punch and it doesn’t disappoint as this whiskey has a mighty 58%ABV. As always we recommend that you drink whiskey how ever you prefer it, but we would suggest that you maybe try adding a small drop (or two) of water to this one, but the decision is yours! If you’re wondering why we’re suggesting adding water. It's because the high alcohol content could dominate the other flavours. By adding the water you will dilute the dominance of the alcohol and allow the other elements of the whiskey to present themselves. We’re big fans of this whiskey (with a couple of drops of water), the flavour profile is interesting and not necessarily what we was expecting. On the nose: Once you get past the alcohol there's a mixture of citrus fruit, chewy toffee a waft of milk chocolate and a hit of pepper To taste: The citrus fruits are back and present themselves alongside malt, lots of malt, lots and lots of malt!! The finish: Quite spicy with a touch of chocolate, very nice!

Welcome to our interactive tasting notes, we look forward to hearing what you think of the Whiskeys we have sourced this month. This is your place to tell us how you've enjoyed your Whiskeys, whether that be neat, over ice, in a cocktail, with a mixer or however you prefer to sip your pour. We have included some information and tasting notes below, on what the distillers suggest you'll find; this may help you pull out flavours as you look for them, but don’t worry if you don’t. There is no right or wrong answer, how you drink your Whiskey and the flavours you find are what you can relate to so feel free to share your experience.
