Penderyn The Headliner
Jamaican Rum Casks & Ruby Port Casks | 46% ABV
The Headliner is the ninth release in Penderyn's Icons of Wales series and celebrates former British Prime Minister David Lloyd George, a significant Welsh historical figure.
But for whisky lovers, it's the casks that make this dram particularly interesting.
The whisky has been matured in Jamaican rum and ruby port casks, bringing together two very different sources of sweetness and fruit character.
And the result? A seriously fruity and indulgent Welsh single malt.
On the nose
Expect red berries, strawberries and cream, with cranberry, vanilla and light oak sitting underneath.
Then come the spices, nutmeg and cinnamon, adding warmth and preventing the sweetness from becoming too straightforward.
On the palate
The sweetness develops into dried fruits, salted caramel, floral honey and spice, followed by a welcome kick of black pepper and a touch of tannic dryness.
It's a lovely example of how cask finishing can transform the character of a spirit.
The finish
Sweetness gradually gives way to a dry, fruity finish, leaving you with enough spice and oak to make you want to go back for another sip.
